Question 1: "When a people are enslaved, as long as they hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key to their prison."
Can you think examples in history where a conquered people had their language taken away from them or had a language imposed on them?
Answer 1: Colonization of America and Australia are such examples. The conquered races imposed their languages on the natives or local inhabitants. Here, English was imposed in North America and Australia. Spanish and Portuguese were imposed on the people of Latin American countries.
Question 2: What happens to a linguistic minority in a state? How do you think they can keep their language alive? For example: Punjabis in Bangalore; Tamilians in Mumbai; Kannadigas in Delhi; Gujaratis in Kolkata.
Answer 2: A linguistic minority often faces a lot of problems in a state. They have to learn a new language which is spoken by the majority of that state. The medium of instruction in lower level schools or educational institutions affiliated to Board and Universities of that state is generally the language of the majority. Punjabis in Bangalore, Tamilians in Mumbai, Kannadigas in Delhi or Gujaratis in Kolkata might face such type of problems. In order to safeguard and keep their linguistic and cultural identities alive they celebrate their festivals and rituals in their own ways, maintain community centers etc.
Question 3: Is it possible to carry pride in one's language too far? Do you know what linguistic chauvinism means?
Answer 3: It is good to feel proud of one’s own language, culture, and traditions but to carry this pride too far is not good. Because we should give due recognition and respect to the language and culture of minority groups and communities.
One’s pride in one’s own language to the extent of crazy possessiveness is termed as ‘linguistic chauvinism’. The order from Berlin to impose German in French schools of Alsace and Lorraine is a perfect example of this. We find linguistic chauvinism in Germany of Bismark.
